For two decades, digital platforms tried to fix local markets by making them searchable and transactable. Marketplaces improved discovery. But the unit economics stayed broken, because they solved discovery, not coordination.

The operational load never disappeared. Local remained synonymous with 'not venture-scale'; not because the markets were small, but because the work couldn't scale.

Local services in the UK exceed £100B, and $600B+ in the US. Including childcare, eldercare, trades, hospitality, healthcare, government and more. These are massive categories built on trust and proximity, historically unable to unlock their full potential because coordination complexity made them inefficient to grow profitably.

AI is dissolving those constraints.

Five shifts have converged in the past 24 months:

Between April 2025 and January 2026, I embedded myself in Hackney Wick, Fish Island, and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park — first as a resident in the local creative and small-business ecosystem, then briefly as an ad salesperson for The Wick, a community newspaper. That role meant spending hours each day visiting shops, cafés, studios, and micro-businesses. I got to know roughly 100 local operators, artists, and long-time residents.

The same pattern appeared everywhere:

A cheesemonger fighting for repeat customers.

An artist talented enough for a global audience, trapped by limited tools.

A trusted local newspaper whose business model barely covered printing.

Brilliant operators spending their days on coordination instead of craft. Scheduling. Invoicing. Marketing that didn't work. Partnerships that took too much time. These aren't sector problems. They're infrastructure problems. The same coordination failures appear across every local market.

In 2025, I also helped bring The Wick Book to life — a 160-page community coffee table book. Using only natural language in Replit, I spun up a website, attached it to a domain, integrated payment processing, launched pre-orders in under a week for under £100, and we've so far captured £20k in sales. What would have cost several thousands of pounds became self-serviceable.

That's the point. AI-era infrastructure turns community assets into economic assets. It turns local potential into local velocity.

Local isn't a postcode. Local is a market where value exchange requires real-world presence, context-dependent judgment, trust that can't be preverified cheaply, and operational coordination that historically required phone calls, spreadsheets, and heroic human effort.

These markets have been illegible for decades. Now they're becoming computable.

Once an AI-native operating system embeds itself in a neighbourhood's rhythms, it is nearly impossible to dislodge. Switching costs become social, contextual, and reputation-driven — not just financial.

Local is no longer the opposite of scalable. Local is the largest unstructured operating system in the economy.

If a company treats locality as a moat rather than a limitation, and its operating system absorbs the coordination burden historically handled by exhausted humans, we want to see it.

The bottleneck is no longer technical ability or access to tools. Talented operators can build and ship faster than at any point in history.

The bottleneck is capital with the conviction to back the right problems at the right altitude.

As AI makes global markets infinitely scalable and context-free, the markets that require context, trust, and proximity are becoming disproportionately valuable.
